Thelma has grown up in rural Norway, the quiet and shy daughter of over-protective, devoutly Christian parents. On the surface all is calm, but a disturbing flashback has already hinted at darker depths. It is when Thelma leaves the family home to study at Oslo University that things start to happen. The conservative values instilled in her by her parents are challenged when she experiences romantic love for the first time – for beautiful classmate Anja. The hormonal surge of first love, however, unleashes other, potentially dangerous forces, as Thelma begins to realise she has telekinetic powers. With nods to “Carrie” and “The Exorcist”, “Thelma” has its fair share of shocks, but retains at its heart a gentle romanticism.
