Set in the 1980s, “That they may face the rising sun” centres on Joe and Kate, a young artistic couple who have relocated from London to rural Ireland. Joe is a writer and Kate still has half ownership of a London gallery. They live in a scattered, rural community near to where Joe grew up. Their life is as far away from the city rat race as imaginable. Their year unfolds through the rituals of work and domesticity. Neighbours drop in unannounced for a cup of tea. There is a wedding and a death. The passing seasons are milestones. Despite the rural charm, however, life can still be hard for the local people and we witness how isolation and loneliness take their toll. As Joe and Kate have adjusted to their slower lifestyle, so must the viewer adjust to a slower kind of film. Don’t expect any car chases!
