The relationship between veteran New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard and actress Anne Wiazemsky is under the spotlight in this witty and acerbic feature, based on a memoir by Wiazemsky herself. The young actress starred in several of Godard’s films, becoming his muse and eventually his wife. The film parallels the course of their relationship with the artistic development of the director, during the turbulent days of the riots of May 1968. As Godard’s cinematic style shifts from the imaginatively playful to the radically doctrinaire, the couple’s private life becomes darker and more unstable. Hazanavicius, while admiring Godard to a certain extent, nevertheless takes irreverent delight in debunking the man, sending up his pomposity and his beloved theories with unabashed glee!
