Tokyo, the present day. Hirayama’s life follows a well tread routine. Every morning he leaves his tiny apartment, drinks a coffee from a nearby machine, gets into his van, carefully chooses which audio tape to put on and drives to his work in a much smarter part of the city. His job? A toilet cleaner, admittedly in a top of the range public convenience. Hirayama is conscientious and reliable and takes pride and satisfaction in his work. The rest of his daily routine is also a source of contentment for him; his lunch in the park, his evening meal, the music he chooses to listen to, his passion for photography, particularly of trees, and his bedtime reading. Other individuals come in and out of his life from time to time without seemingly upsetting his equilibrium. Minimalist, meditative and with a great soundtrack from the 60s and 70s, “Perfect Days” has captivated audiences worldwide.
