In present-day Hamburg, Katja, a loving if unconventional young wife and mother, struggles to come to terms with the vicious act of terrorist violence that killed her husband and six-year-old son. They were, however, not victims of a random bomb attack, her husband’s office having been expressly targeted. Although the police, rather blinkered, suspect the violence to be either gang related or Islamist inspired, as Katja’s husband was Kurdish and in the past had dealt in drugs, it transpires that the murders were the work of Nazi sympathisers. When they are eventually caught and brought to trial, for Katja, already assailed by shock, grief and raw anger, the tortuous path towards revenge and justice is only just beginning. Both gripping courtroom drama and heart-stopping thriller, “In the Fade” is a film for our time.
