This triptych of a film lays bare the crisis gripping present-day Israel and, in particular, the intense personal anguish of a middle-class Tel Aviv family. In the first part a married couple are faced with the devastating news of the death in action of their soldier son Jonathan. In the central section we move to a remote checkpoint in the desert where bored conscripts while away the time telling stories, listening to music, even dancing. There reigns a comically surreal, highly charged atmosphere of frustration – just waiting to turn nasty. Back in the city Jonathan’s parents are desperately trying to make sense of their lives. But all is not what it seems, and lies and cover-ups are never far from the surface. Intensely moving and visually impressive, ‘Foxtrot’ won the Grand Jury prize at Venice in 2017.
