“Fallen Leaves” is the latest soulful comedy from Finnish director Kaurismäki who brought us “Le Havre” and “The Other Side of Hope”, both shown at LFS. A lonely man and woman, both down on their luck, meet in a dismal karaoke bar and tentatively begin a relationship. Their romance is portrayed in the typically deadpan fashion that is the director’s hallmark, but is none the less touching for that. However, will blossoming love be derailed by this lugubrious man’s issues with alcohol..? A tender, sweet natured film, full of quirky insights, with wonderfully droll performances from the two main protagonists.
