“Cordillera of Dreams” is the third film in Patricio Guzmán’s acclaimed trilogy documenting the geography and history of his native Chile. The previous two : “Nostalgia for the Light” and “The Pearl Button” were also shown at LFS. Like its predecessors the present film is a haunting, elegiac meditation on the eternal beauty of the Chilean landscape, in juxtaposition with footage of the brutal conflicts of that country’s recent past and interviews with its survivors. The natural world that bears silent witness to these upheavals is exemplified here by the majestic cordillera de los Andes, the mountain range that separates Chile from Argentina and is the backdrop to Santiago, the city of the director’s birth. Guzmán’s unique vision, both poetic and disturbing, proves, as ever, to be an extraordinary cinematic experience.
