Skilfully constructed in real time, this classic of the French New Wave centres on a glamorous young singer, Cleo, who has potentially serious health issues. In the course of one and a half hours she reflects upon her life while waiting for the results of a biopsy. As she wanders the streets of Paris everything, however trivial, seems to take on heightened signifance in the light of her predicament. Her interaction with both friends and strangers, as well as overheard snippets of conversation, now seem to reflect Cleo’s awareness of her own mortality. Still stylish and innovative nearly 60 years after it was made, “Cleo from 5 to 7” is a true classic of the cinema.
