Imagine the scenario. Four oddball college friends, bored with their uneventful suburban existence, yearn for a meaningful life experience, brought about by their own decisive action. Nurtured on heist movies, these misguided young men decide to embark on a heist of their very own. Their plan, to steal two priceless antiquarian books from the university library, is laughably inept and absurd. Surely no-one in their right mind would countenance such a plan? However, the old cliche rings true; truth is indeed stranger than fiction! In 2004 at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, four students actually attempted to put such a plan into action, thereby embarking on an existential journey to nowhere! Interspersing this fictionalised account of events with to-camera interviews with the real-life protagonists, American Animals provokes laughter and despair in equal measure.
