In the late nineteenth century Danish engineer Captain Dinesen, accompanied by his daughter Ingeborg and a small unit of Argentinian soldiers, is on an expedition in remote Patagonia, ostensibly searching for Jauja, a mythical paradise on earth.
When Ingeborg disappears with a young soldier, Dinesen’s desperate search for her across the unforgiving landscape becomes an obsessive journey into the subconscious. Subverting various cinematic and literary genres, including the Western, the horror story and the fairy-tale, “Jauja” does not readily yield its mysteries. It does, however repay close attention and provides plenty for both eye and brain to feast upon.
