Dastardly goings-on in rural French backwaters have been a fertile source of inspiration for France’s master of suspense, Claude Chabrol, and “Cop au Vin” proves no exception. Young postman Louis and his eccentric, disabled mother live in a large, ramshackle house which a trio of local worthies have their eye on for investment purposes. However, neither Louis nor his mother is interested in selling. When one of the trio dies in an accident brought about by Louis, the aggressively unorthodox inspector Lavardin arrives to investigate… With his characteristic pitch-black humour Chabrol deftly lifts the lid on the scandals, deceptions and murky secrets hidden just below the surface of a respectable little town.
