Who says that crime does not pay? In this period comedy set in ’30s Paris, directed by LFS favourite François Ozon, flatmates Madeleine and Pauline find their respective careers blossoming after the former confesses to the murder of a theatrical producer. The fact that Madeleine has not committed the crime seems neither here nor there! Pauline, a struggling young lawyer will defend her actress flatmate in her upcoming trial. Both women treat the trial as a no holds barred performance, neither of them seeming to contemplate the dire consequences of failure! The whole nation hangs on its outcome and Madeleine, posing as a wronged woman protecting her virtue, goes down sensationally in court and is duly acquitted. From then on the sky’s the limit for both of them – that is until the sudden and inconvenient appearance of the actual murderer! With wonderful period costumes, art deco sets and its frothy concoction of murder, glamour and romance, “The Crime is Mine” never fails to entertain.
