In this modern-day Odyssey we share the hopes, fears and suffering of two teenage boys, Seydou and Moussa, as they join a gruelling trek from Senegal across the Sahara to the Mediterranean, in search of a better life in Italy. They are led through the desert to Libya by a paid guide who, unsurprisingly, turns out to be working with ruthless gangmasters, whose only concern is to make as much money as possible out of the plight of would-be migrants. Moussa and Seydou are separated in Libya and Seydou finds himself in a Mafia-run jail along with others like him from all over Africa. After something resembling a slave auction Seydou is finally freed and manages to find work as a bricklayer. However, his dream of reaching Italy cannot be extinguished. Moving, thrilling and with a touch of magic realism along the way, “Io Capitano” is a true epic of a film.
